About - Ourea Events


Ourea Events is the trading name of Ourea Ltd and the business owns and organises challenging off-road mountain running events. Each event has a unique feel and identity, which has been carefully crafted to meet the very high standards of off-road running connoisseurs. Why Ourea Events? According to Greek mythology, the Ourea were primeval deities and the children of Gaia. They were thought to dwell in the mountains and considered to be the mountain spirits. Ourea Events maintains an ethos that remains true to the spirit of adventure in the mountains.


If you choose to enter one of our events you can be assured of a challenging and memorable experience that is meticulously organised by a highly-motivated team of professionals, who share your passion for running and adventure.


Ourea Events is a member of 1% for the Planet and therefore 1% of our total sales are donated to grass roots environmental organisations involved with the conservation and protection of the mountains.



Shane Ohly
Race Director

Shane Ohly is a Director of Ourea Ltd and is the senior person, acting as the Race Director, at each of the Ourea Events races. Since 2008 Shane has worked as the Planner, Race Director and/or Event Director at some of the largest adventure sport events with ultimate responsibility for the health and safety of the participants, event team and members of public. He is also an elite mountain runner and orienteer who won the coveted OMM Elite in 2011, 2016 and 2017. Find out more HERE.



Tom Hecht
Marketing Manager

Tom first experienced working with Ourea Events through volunteering at the 2012 Berghaus Dragon’s Back Race™ and was Ourea Events’ first full time employee helping with the logistical organisation of each event and taking charge of the marketing and social media. He is a keen cyclist, skier, scrambler and (fair weather) mountain runner. One day he would love to enter one of our own events (especially the Salomon Glen Coe Skyline®)!




Sue Dowker
Event Administration & Finance 

Sue has been a regular volunteer at our events since helping at the first Marmot Dark Mountains™ in 2013. Being a keen off-road runner and living in Kendal made her a natural choice for this role. Sue is responsible for event-related administration and looking after all things bookkeeping. Alongside Helen, she coordinates the Event Team and participant welfare at each event.




Helen Samson
Event Team and Marketing Coordinator

Helen comes to us with years of experience working in the outdoor industry.  A coach with the local running club and a keen runner herself she makes an excellent addition to the team. Helen is principally responsible for the coordination of the Event Team, dealing with questions that our participants may have and their welfare, whilst also supporting our marketing activities. Additionally, Helen supports Shane as his PA.




Graham Gristwood
Event Manager

With a professional background organising orienteering, multi-sport and team-building events, Graham takes the lead role in the planning of each event, and the coordination of our freelance planning teams. He has a deep knowledge of mapping and map design, so is responsible for ensuring the high quality of our race maps! As a competitor, he has represented GB in both orienteering and mountain running, and still can be seen regularly competing in both the forests and on the hills.

Freelance Event Planner

Based in Scotland, Gary Tompsett is a Freelance Event Planner of some renown, and a consummate participant and podium placer in mountain marathons, foot orienteering, hill running, adventure racing, MTB racing and MTB orienteering. No better credentials will be found for an adventure-maker in the UK! Shane Ohly and Gary Tompsett have been working together on various events since 2008, whilst also sharing some memorable mountain adventures!

Janie Oates
Marketing and Events Coordinator

Janie trekked part of the Cape Wrath trail in 2012 in preparation for her Mountain Leader award. She was then inspired to volunteer on the Cape Wrath Ultra in 2018 after having seen the film of the inaugural event. She now works for Ourea events full time supporting all marketing activities. Originally from the Lake District, she is a keen fell runner and member of local club Helm Hill runners.  





Lucy Scrase
Commercial & Operations Director 

Lucy is an extremely experienced and accomplished event professional with over 10 years of experience as Event Director for outdoor and festival events. 

At Ourea Events she is responsible for managing site safety, contractors, and health and safety compliance.

Warehouse Manager 

Alex has previously volunteered on many events with us. He is now responsible for maintaining event equipment and order in the warehouse.   

He is a keen cyclist and ski instructor. 






Deputy I/C

Beast joined the Ourea Events team in December 2016, and is a loyal office team member. Responsibilities include fetching treats and supervising the human staff.
